What does a visit to The Lodge at Bow Lake look like?

Well, that’s entirely up to you!

But in case you need a little help, we’ve designed a few sample itineraries to get your creative adventure juices flowing:

The hiker’s itinerary

  • Start your trek to The Lodge with a scenic drive from the City of Calgary. On your way, be sure to stop in the Town of Canmore (just over 100 km from Calgary) for lunch on the patio at the Malcolm Hotel set on Spring Creek.

From Canmore, it’s a quick hop, skip, and a jump (or 25km) to the world-famous Town of Banff where you might make a second stop. After leaving Banff, we definitely recommend taking Highway 1A, the slow road, at Castle Junction for a leisurely drive on the Bow Valley Parkway to the Town of Lake Louise, where you’ll exit to the spectacular Icefield Parkway and spend another 25 minutes on the road to The Lodge at Bow Lake.

After arriving at the Lodge and checking in, stretch your road legs with a stroll to the shores of Bow Lake, but be sure to return back to The Lodge in time to join your fellow guests in Jimmy’s Living Room for tea or a glass of wine.

Dinner is served at 6:30 P.M. in The Lodge’s Elkhorn dining room, where our culinary team will delight your senses with their creative Rocky Mountain-inspired cuisine.

After a day of travel and fresh mountain air, you’ll surely be ready to head to your cozy room and curl up under your cozy duvet for a good night’s sleep.

  • The sounds of chirping birds greet you as the sun rises. Coffee, Tea and muffins await in the Elkhorn dining room before you sit down for a hearty breakfast at 8:00 A.M.. After breakfast grab a packed lunch for the trail.

There are loads of options right out the backdoor of The Lodge — no driving required. Bow Falls is a quick hike, or if you are up for a longer day, you might try Iceberg or Hot Dog Lake. Our staff can show you on the map where you are heading.

Head back to The Lodge after your day of hiking in time for a little après hike in the living room where you can enjoy a cup of tea, a snack, or a cold beer — or all three. If that’s not your fancy, you might just soak up the sunshine on the patio.

However you decide to spend your post-hike moments, rest assured that cooking dinner is not on your itinerary. While you were hiking, the kitchen crew was busy preparing another wonderful meal for you that will be ready to enjoy at 6:30 P.M.

If the stars are out after dinner, pop out the back door of The Lodge and walk a few steps away — you don’t need to go far — and watch for shooting stars, figure out the constellations, or listen for the Great Horned Owl. Return to your room to enjoy another restful night at The Lodge.

  • Coffee and tea await the early risers at 7:30 A.M.. Before breakfast you’ll have time for a walk out into the fresh morning air and over to Jimmy Simpson’s original octagonal cabin (located out the back door at just a few paces west of The Lodge). Return for breakfast at 8:00 A.M. and grab another bag lunch for the trail.

Today, the destination is Helen Lake, a short 4-minute drive down the highway to the parking lot. This 12km return hike takes you through forested trails and into high alpine meadows where the surrounding mountain peaks tower overhead.

We will be waiting to greet you with an ice-cold glass of lemonade or beer in the living room when you return. Dinner is once again served in our Elkhorn dining room amongst the spectacular log work handcrafted by Jimmy Simpson over 70 years ago.

Being your last night, you can take on a fellow Lodge guest in a game of Cribbage on one of our unique locally-made Cribbage boards while sipping a whisky from Canmore-based, Wildlife Distillery.

  • With a mist hanging over the lake, a short walk to the bridge to stretch your legs is in order before coming back to The Lodge for breakfast. This morning you will pack your bags and take a bag lunch for another day of hiking, for your trip back to the city, or any other destinations beyond. If you are heading east or west, a shuttle and hike into Larch Valley is highly worthwhile. If you are heading north to Jasper Wilcox Pass is not to be missed. Whichever way, The Lodge’s awesome staff would be happy to guide you in the right direction.

The explorer’s itinerary

  • On your way to the Lodge be sure to stop in Canmore to explore its small downtown and enjoy lunch at one of the many patios lining Main Street. From Canmore, we always suggest taking the Bow Valley Parkway just past Banff. This road is quieter, affords better chances to see wildlife, and slows the pace down in preparation for your relaxing stay at the Lodge at Bow Lake. Take Castle Junction to Highway 1A all the way to the Town of Lake Louise where you’ll exit to the spectacular Icefields Parkway and spend about 25 minutes on the road to The Lodge at Bow Lake.

After you arrive and check in at The Lodge, stretch your legs and explore the short walk out to where Jimmy Simpson started all his pack trips years ago, then join your fellow guests in the Jimmy’s Living Room for tea or a cold beer.

Your four course dinner is served by our welcoming staff at 6:30 P.M. in the Elkhorn dining room. If you’ve had a long travel day you might want to retire to your room after dinner. Or, if you feel up to it, why not join us in the living room for a post-dinner beverage and a good book by the roaring fireplace?

  • After breakfast (served at 8:00 A.M.) you’ll grab a packed lunch and head north to explore the most magical section of the world-renowned Icefields Parkway. Although the Icefields is your ultimate destination there are numerous viewpoints to stop along the way. Heading in the opposite direction you arrived, it is surprising how different the perspective is coming south. Be sure to ask one of our team members for their must-see spots along the Parkway.

After your day of exploring, return to our oasis on Bow Lake where we’ll will have après -hike ready in the living room for you.

A shower and a nap before dinner will have you salivating for the next meal, after which you may be ready to get your head down in your cozy room following your busy day of adventuring.

  • Today, your journey will take you in the opposite direction where you will head south and west into Yoho National Park on a drive to the spectacular Takkakaw Falls. After visiting the falls and if there is time, continue out to Emerald Lake, another jewel of a Rocky Mountain lake. No trip to Yoho is complete without a visit to the quaint town of Field, where a visit to the Velvet Antler Studio is a must. The proprietors have been a Field institution for decades and will most surely welcome you like family.

When you return to The Lodge, you too will feel like you are coming home. Again, a cup of tea or cold glass of lemonade await where you can stave off your dinner pangs with a nibble at our après -hike. The Lodge’s culinary team has been busy while you were off exploring and will have dinner waiting in the Elkhorn Dining room at 6:30 P.M..

The evening is yours to relax, take a starry night stroll, or share takes of your day’s adventures with other guests.

  • Your last breakfast at The Lodge is served at 8:00 A.M. in the dining room. Don’t worry; we won’t send you on your way empty-handed. You’ll get a packed lunch to take with you as you depart The Lodge home, for more exploring, or wherever your travels will take you. Today, we can help book a shuttle bus for you to visit Moraine Lake, which, at one time, its image graced the back of the Canadian $10 bill. There are multiple shuttles in and out each day; however, it is important that you have a reservation for the inbound bus. This area is especially beautiful in the fall when the Larch trees turn a magnificent golden-yellow colour. Wherever your day takes you, we’ll send you on your way feeling a little more relaxed, rested, and well taken care of.

The winter itinerary

  • Heading west on the Trans Canada Highway towards The Lodge will take you past the wintery mountain Town of Canmore, where you’ll want to stop for a bit of exploring. If you’re a cross-country skier you’ll most definitely want to visit the Canmore Nordic Centre, the ski venue for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Its vast network of trails for both beginner and advanced skiers are impeccably groomed and lead you through the pine forests on the slopes of Rundle Mountain. You can rent skis as well as arrange for lessons if you desire.

Moving along from Canmore, you’ll continue down the Trans Canada Highway until you reach the Town of Lake Louise, where you’ll exit to the spectacular Icefields Parkway and spend another 25 minutes on the road to The Lodge at Bow Lake. When you arrive at The Lodge to check in between 3:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M., we’ll be ready to greet you with a roaring fire and a beverage at the bar in Jimmy’s Living Room.

At 6:30 P.M., you’ll join your fellow winter guests in the Elkhorn Dining Room for a delicious four-course meal prepared by our talented culinary team. After dinner, you might consider relaxing by the fire, playing a few board games in the living room, or if your day’s adventures have taken their toll, it may just be time to snuggle up under the warmth of the duvet in your room.

  • After a hearty breakfast served in the dining room at 8:00 A.M., grab your packed lunch and join us for a day of backcountry skiing right out the back door of The Lodge. The Bow Lake area is the premier backcountry ski destination in the Rocky Mountains. Ready to experience the thrill of untracked powder and alpine glades all with the background of Canada’s premier mountain range? We guarantee this is the unforgettable experience you’ve been waiting for. We can coach you through what is needed and set you up with a certified guide to be your companion for the day. You can also get yourself set up on one of our guided trips here.

Or if backcountry skiing doesn’t pique your interest, why not strap on a pair cross country skis or snowshoes and explore the meadows surrounding The Lodge. The meadows go forever, the views are incredible, and the solitude is invigorating.

Wherever your day takes you, return to The Lodge before the sun sets for a little après-ski in the living room, followed by another delicious four-course meal. After dinner, you might bundle up and take a late-night mountain walk in search of the elusive aurora borealis, or it might be time to rest your head on your pillow to gear up for another day of winter adventuring.

  • Another mouth-watering breakfast awaits you and your fellow guests as you decide on the big question: will it be a repeat of yesterday’s activities or a quick 25-minute drive down the highway to reach the chair lift at Lake Louise Ski Resort for a day of downhill skiing?

Returning to The Lodge at the end of the day has been described like coming home, but someone else cooks! What could be better after a full day of winter activities? After freshening up in your lake-view room, join the other Lodge guests (now your lifelong friends) for a filling meal and elegant dessert. Will the Northern Lights evade you this evening?

  • As you depart The Lodge after breakfast, be sure to grab a packed lunch and say farewell to our staff.

Now it’s time for a snowshoe or ski right outside the door or maybe you’ve opted for another day at the ski hill. This time, you can head to Sunshine Village on your way back to Calgary.

We take care of everything, including three exquisite meals a day.

All room rates at The Lodge include delicious and nourishing meals for two people: a four-course dinner, a hearty breakfast, a delicious packed lunch to take adventuring, and après-ski or après-hike afternoon snacks.
